There are a lot of articles talking about guide to start photography. This is my personal view based on my experience. Below is the summary.
1. Start with your own camera right away
We don’t have to wait until we have perfect camera. Start with your own camera right away. The best camera is the one that you bring. Learning photography is learning to see. The main important thing here is the way we see the world. It is about wow to extract the extra ordinary image from ordinary view.
2. Bring your camera with you more often
Increase the amount of time you spend with your camera, bring them more often. This to ensure that you will get more shot as you will see more moment while you carrying your camera.
3. Shot more and more, it’s free anyway
In this digital photography era right now, we can take picture more than we can imagine before. In comparison with analog photography, we can say that there is no limitation of number image that we can take with out digital camera. There will be some conversation later about shutter count latter to see the limit of our camera shot. But for now just take more and more picture.
It is activity with intention not just wasting the memory of card. In general, people need time to learn something. We need some time to advance our photography skill. By shot more image we can make the learning process much faster. Henri Cartier Bressen said “Your first 10,000 photographs are worst”. It might be true or not, but by having this 10,000 photographs faster, we will get to the better picture faster.
4. Intentionally Create bad photos to learn how to create a good one
The first assignment of photography course by Marc Levoy in Google Office Mountain View is creating bad photos. Creating bad photos is reverse physology trick to get opposite result. By learning how to make a bad photos we will understand how the good photos should be.
5. Don’t spend too much time searching for photography learning material, get one and finish it
It is very often that we want to get as much as possible photography learning material. We are googling photography e-book, photography magazine, photography tutorial and pilled them as photography learning resource material. Unfortunately none of them we read until it finished.
It is better to get one and finished it. Almost all photography learning resource material will cover the basic thing about exposure and how to take good picture on the beginning section of the book. By reading one material until it finished, it will help us understand more complete material rather than history of camera, pin hole and exposure technique.
I did not say learning from many resource is bad, but at the beginning we need to get complete material first. Latter on we can learn from other resource bit by bit.
6. Share your pictures

The real offline photographers community will help speeding the learning process. We can go hunting together, learning by doing on the field and review the result of the image together.
8. Find the leverage
Most of us start learning photography as hobbies. It is a good start. We learn something that we like. Nothing is better than that. But sometime the motivation is up and down. We need to find something that keep us moving and motivated. Think about participating photography competition, think about becoming contributor of Getty Image, think about selling your photograph online and get some revenue or any other think that can motivate us to keep going.
9. Spend sometime to review your image
One of the challenge in digital photography right now is the amount of image that we can get from our photography activities. We will have tremendous amount of photograph in our hard drive. 11. Write your understanding about photography
Writing is re-learn and un-learn process of any activities. By writing your understanding, you will keep remember those thing if you forgot. You also will have opportunity to contemplate and have better understanding during the witing. In most of time it will bring another question about material that you write so we can learn more about the topic. So you learn, re-learn and un-learn.
